In 1902 Teddy Roosevelt appointed Bat as U.S. Deputy Marshal Southern District of New York where he served from 1902 until 1909.
Bat also worked as an editor for the New York Morning Telegraph and continued to write for the New York Morning Telegraph after serving as U.S. Marshal
